into the background. Many like the approval and acceptance of others. It’s good for business. People who are
in sales need to be known and liked by others so that they can make contacts and be able to present their
products and sell them to others. Popularity also has great benefits for sports teams. When you have a popular quarterback or a receiver on a football team or a point guard or center on a basketball team, it draws attention from the media and from fans.

It also pulls people into the stadiums and arenas to see these athletes play. People enjoy being known by others and being called by their name instead of someone saying, “hey you.” You like it when they know who you are and use your name.

St. Marks Lutheran School Spirit Week – January 16-20, 2012

This year for Spirit Week we will be collecting donations for the new American Family Children’s Hospital at UW Watertown Regional Medical Center.

The hospital is in need of toys, stuffed animals , and children’s books. The books will be placed into Joel’s Library located in the Children’s Hospital. The books are there for the children to read while they are in the hospital, and they can also check the books out and take them home.

The Children’s Hospital also has a program called “Let’s Make Waves”. This program is for individuals who wish to make a monetary donation. If you would like, parents can have their children donate monies to this program in place of books, toys, or stuffed animals. Our plan is with the money donated to purchase a “Sea Friend” that will be permanently displayed in the American Family Children’s Hospital on 2nd floor.

For Spirit Week; the children of St. Mark’s can donate the following: stuffed animals, children’s books, toys, or a gift of money.

A number of years ago a young college graduate from our congregation said to me, “Pastor Werner, the church is all about money. It’s all about getting people to give more and more to keep things running.” Recently someone said to me, “It seems every time I come to church, I hear references to giving. I give enough. I don’t need to be told to give more.”

We hear about money every day. We listen to the evening news report and we are told that the stock market dropped another 140 points. We are then told how this impacts the 401K’s and pension funds of people and how they are not earning as much as they used to. Then we hear the unemployment report and how more people are without work and unable to find jobs. Then we listen to the reports on how the cost of fuel and food is rising. It can be very depressing. It also fills people’s hearts and minds with fear and uncertainty.

When money becomes your god and your god is not providing you with the security and future that you hoped for then people begin to worry and fret. They hang on to their money a little tighter and they are afraid that they are not going to have enough. Isn’t it interesting how our selfish nature, the unbelieving world and the devil himself continues to work on us so that we become more and more selfish and think first and foremost of our wants and needs and push aside the work of God’s church.

Today as we conclude our three week sermon series on managing the gifts of God, our time, talents and treasures, the Word of God before us has us consider the management of our money. I would like you to consider with me the thought that the college graduate presented to me; IT’S ALL ABOUT MONEY??

The Apostle Paul in his second letter to the Christians in Corinth, Greece speaks to them about giving. This giving was for the church in Jerusalem. The believers in Jerusalem had suffered a famine and possible persecution because of their faith and trust in Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord. So the Christians in Asia Minor and also in Greece had decided to gather an offering of money to send to Jerusalem to help out their fellow believers in their time of need. The people in Corinth had begun their offering a year earlier, but it had bogged down and possibly come to a halt because of problems in the congregation. Now Paul encourages them to finish what they had begun. He uses the example of the churches in northern Greece and what they had done to encourage the Corinthians; he then reminds them I) Look What the Lord Has Given You. Paul also praises this congregation for how they excel in so many areas of their Christian life as individuals and as a gathering of believers. He now encourages them to II) Excel in the Grace of Giving.

LOOK WHAT THE LORD HAS GIVEN YOU

When you and I watch news reports and read articles on the internet and in magazines and newspapers we are continually reminded of what we don’t have or what we are losing as our economy continues to waver back and forth and none of our jobs are a certainty any longer. Have you ever noticed that most ads for things stress the idea that you can’t live without this new cell phone with all the special apps. You need the newest ipad or iphone to be in. All these ads appeal to our selfish nature which agrees that these things will make life so much easier and it will make us happy if we own them. Of course, all of these new things cost money. And often we shell out more and more dollars for all these things to be on the forefront and cutting edge of technology. But what happens to these new pieces of technology? Next year they will be outdated and you will need to buy new ones to replace the old ones which were supposed to be the answer to what you needed to be out in front in keeping up with the latest news and communicating with your friends. I remember a number of years ago as I was doing my taxes on Turbo Tax and using an old computer that the tax program informed me that I needed to purchase a new computer because the computer I was using was too old and too slow to keep up with the software that Turbo Tax was using. The things of this world will never bring us certainty, security or peace that so many long for.

Paul understood this as he wrote to the believers in Corinth and as he addresses you and me in 2011. Paul reminds us of what we possess that the Lord has given us. He writes, “You know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.” (V. 9) God’s love for us is amazing. Even though the eternal Son of God possessed all glory, perfection and peace; he left his home in heaven. Would you give up a perfect home where you had no troubles, experienced no rejection, hatred or opposition and go to a place where you knew you would face open hostility, opposition and finally be put to death by your enemies? I wouldn’t. But that is exactly what the Son of God did for each of us. That’s love. That is selflessness. Jesus thought first of you and me rather than of himself. That’s the grace of God that Paul is reminding us of. What was the Lord’s purpose in doing this? Jesus did this to give each of us here today peace and certainty. We have the peace of pardon and forgiveness. We are not living in constant fear of death and punishment. Why not? Jesus Christ endured that punishment and that death in our place and as a result we have been set free from the curse of sin. We also have certainty. We have the certainty that the Lord will take care of our every need. Notice I said our needs not our wants. What do we need? The Bible says that our needs are food, clothing and shelter. The Lord will provide us with what we need. He takes care of us and often provides us with much more than we need for today. We are rich. How often do you consider yourself rich? You and I possess the greatest and most costly treasure we could ever have. We possess the forgiveness of sins. We have the certainty of an eternal home with the Lord Jesus in heaven. As citizens of our nation, we are some of the richest people materially that the world has ever known. How many people in the world, can say they have their own apartment or home, possibly a summer home, two or more vehicles and the list goes on. I saw people in China who were happy to have an eight foot by six foot room in an apartment building two, three or more stories beneath the ground with a bathroom at the end of the hall shared by numerous others. At least they had a roof over their heads. Someplace they could come home to after putting in long hours on their job. We have so much more.

EXCEL IN THE GRACE OF GIVING

In view of all the blessings that God has showered upon us, Paul now encourages us to excel in the grace of giving. Before he talks about giving Paul praises God for what the people in Corinth already are excelling in their faith life. He writes, “But just as you excel in everything – in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us – see that you also excel in this grace of giving.” (v. 7) As we look at the saints at St. Mark’s we see the same thing. Members of our congregation are excelling in their faith that is in their trust and confidence not just in Jesus as their Savior and Lord but in the many other promises that God has made to them. I was recently speaking to one of our members who broke her hip and she said to me, “If I have to go to a nursing home for rehab, I’ll go, but I would prefer to go home, but I would like best is to go home to be with Jesus. But if God still has something for me to do, I will continue on and live one day at a time.” We see our members excelling in their speech as they openly and boldly confess their faith in Jesus to others and invite them to come and hear of the wonderful things that God has done for us. Our members also excel in knowledge as they daily read God’s Word, attend Bible studies, ask questions and seek to grow in their understanding and in their faith. We see the same thing in our students who attend St. Mark’s School and our high schools, Lakeside Lutheran and Luther Prep. There is a desire to continue to learn more and more about the Lord their loving Creator, Savior and Friend.

In addition to these graces Paul now says, “See that you also excel in this grace of giving.” This is something that God works in us. I cannot make you grow in your giving, but the Lord can. Recently I was speaking to someone who told me that he had set aside a certain amount of money for some recreation that he had planned before returning home to this country. He met someone who was going on a mission trip and gave that money to the missionaries. He told me that later that week the Lord provided him with the money that he had set apart for his recreation and even more as he was given money owed to him by some friends. The Lord was teaching this young man a lesson that you put the Lord first and he will take care of your needs and even more. Another person who had finally secured a job and was now able to begin to pay his bills spoke to me about the use of his money. As he was talking he told me that he had purchased a subscription to a magazine that he enjoyed. But he said to me, “You know my mother and brother have really helped me out during those difficult times I had, I feel sort of guilty putting myself first. I think I should be giving back to them for the help they have given to me.” I told him that he was right and he needed to show his appreciation for the help that his family had given him.

Likewise each of us can grow in our grace of giving. When we count the blessings that God has showered upon us, we can’t help but say “Thank you, Lord”. One of the ways that we do that is with our generous offerings to the Lord. Monthly in our newsletter every member of this congregation is informed on how we are doing financially as a congregation. One of the things we praise the Lord for is that our offerings continue to increase every year. God’s people are responding joyfully and generously as we continue to pay off the debt we have on our school building. We are able to make our monthly payments and also begin to reduce the principal of our loan. This is the work of our loving Lord. However, as many of us know we still are not able to cover the costs for our daily operations. We will continue to lay this need before you. As the Lord moves you to give generously and cheerfully, we pray that soon the offerings of God’s saints will be able to meet the costs of our operations. We also realize that we cannot spend more than we have. Soon we will have to look at the options that are before us and if necessary begin to cut staff. We have frozen the wages of our workers for the past four years in order not to cut any of our staff. It is important that our membership is aware of what we are facing. How can a person respond to God’s love and blessings, if we don’t know what challenges and opportunities we face as a congregation?

Is it all about money as the young college graduate said to me? No.

It is about proclaiming the good news of God’s forgiveness in Jesus Christ to our community and to our children. Does this take money? It certainly does. The monies that we receive to do this ministry are the gifts of God’s people generously and cheerfully given. These monies are well spent as they prepare people for eternity, that which will last forever – eternal life with Jesus in heaven. For this we thank and praise our God who has promised to bless the preaching of His word.

Here is the information we received this week from the Synod Office in Milwaukee.

Last week the Commission on Lutheran Schools held its annual meeting. One of the items on the Commission’s agenda was to decide the accreditation levels of each school that has completed a self-study, hosted a site visit team, and submitted an annual school improvement plan.

I am happy to announce to you that St. Mark’s has received “Exemplary Accreditation” for the 2011-2012 school year.

You will be presented with your WELSSA Certificate at the WI State Teachers’ Conference.

Rehearsals Kick Off for “Tumbleweeds” – St Marks 2011 Fall Musical!

On November 18th students from grades 6-8 will be performing Tumbleweeds, an Old West comedy about zany, but lovable characters!

Everyone who tried out will be cast, either by role or by chorus.

• Each child will be responsible for his/her own costume, with the guidance and help from Miss Stubalt.
• Rehearsals will start Wednesday, October 12th.

We only have six short weeks to put the performance together, so rehearsal days will be Tuesday through Friday, 3:15-5:00 in the gym.

Not all students will need to be present for every rehearsal.

• A calendar will come home with your child showing which days he/she needs to be present.
• Also, with the theme this year being the “Old West”, Miss Stubalt will be looking for many items for props!
• Watch in future newsletters for a list of items St. Mark’s is looking to borrow for the production.

The families and students of St. Mark’s Ev. Lutheran School have completed another successful school year. In many ways this year has been a very good year, educationally.

Thank you to all the parents and other family members that helped make this a great school year.

The students have learned many new things but most important of all, the students have learned about their Savior and their eternal salvation.

For many families, this year has been filled with sorrow and sadness over the loss of loved ones. We never know when the Lord will bring our time on the earth to a close and take us to heaven to be with Him for all eternity.

Therefore, stay vigilant throughout the summer by worshiping every week in the house of the Lord. Conduct daily family devotions which will strengthen your faith and the faith of those in your family.

Pray daily for God’s guidance and strength to face the challenges that life throws your way. Make Jesus Number One in your summer life.

May God keep you and your family safe and healthy this summer and God willing we will see you back in September for the start of another school year.

Facilities
The facilities include a lodge, consisting of a kitchen and dining area, plus a large activities area.

• There are eight cabins with twelve beds each, plus a counselor area and modern bathroom facilities in each cabin.
• There is a large grounds area, and there is swimming and other activities in nearby Prairie du Chien.
• Camp Wyalusing is staffed by a dedicated group of volunteers from WELS congregations.

• Kids, That Have Completed Grades 2-8

WHEN:

• July 10-15, 2011

WHERE:

• Wyalusing State Park (Near Prairie du Chien)

COST:

• $105 Camp Fee. A minimum deposit of $25 is required when you register, which will be refundable until June 17.
• The remaining $80 is due when you arrive at camp.

GENERAL INFO:

Camp Wyalusing opens at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 10, 2011. Parents can drop campers off at this time if they do not wish to ride the bus from Lakeside Lutheran High School or Eastside Lutheran Church (Madison, WI).

• Camp closes at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, July 15, 2011. Parents are welcome to pick up campers, but they must be picked up by 9:00.

• A school bus is used to travel to different activities, as well as to transport campers to and from Eastside in Madison and Lakeside in Lake Mills.

• An e-mail acknowledging your registration will be sent upon receipt of your application, followed by a health form in June. No physical exam is required.

• Apply ASAP. Applications are accepted in the order they are received.
