He is a native of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. He attended Sturgeon Bay public schools, graduating in 1981.
In preparation for the holy ministry, he graduated from Northwestern College of Watertown in 1985. The college is now Martin Luther College located in New Ulm, Minnesota.
Pastor Walther married Sandy (nee) Bartel in 1986. They have been blessed with four children: Nathan (1988), Amanda (1990), Christopher (1998), and Alyssa (2001).
