August 29: Tile on Hold

Friday, August 29th, 2008

The landscape outside the new classrooms has been smoothed in preparation for the upcoming first days of school. It’s looking great!

Inside, progress is also moving along, with one exception: the concrete. According to construction superintendent Matt Hollman, the concete has not dried enough for tile flooring to be installed.

“Concrete takes time to cure out and there are so many variables,” says Matt. “We’ve been running air conditioning and dehumidifiers. We were at 9, 10, and 11% moisture content and now we’re at 7.1%. We need to be down to 5% to install the VCT (vinyl composition tile).”

To those students anxiously awaiting the start of school: Not to fear!

While the concrete could take months to dry, classes can continue without tile on the floor. St. Mark’s will be able to use the classrooms with concrete floors and the tile will be installed during Thanksgiving and Christmas vacations.

August 22: Working Down to the Wire

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

Crews from Walsh Masonry worked hard and fast this week to ready the gymnasium walls for Friday’s delivery of bar joists for the roof. As shown above, a crane lowered each of the 18 joists and then men from H&B Steel secured them into place.

Elsewhere, in the classroom portion, progress is also moving fast. All totaled, a project record of 68 men worked to install ceiling tiles, bathroom fixtures, cabinetry, drywall, mechanicals, painting and more.

“We’re down to the wire in Phase One,” says construction superintendent Matt Hollman,
of the classroom-ready portion of our building/renovation project. “We have 11 days left before we want to be finished. We’ll probably be working some Saturdays.”

At right, Daley Painting, of Watertown, adds finishing touches to the walls and trim, and builders from Maas Brothers bring in cabinets built by Hillcraft Ltd, of Madison.

August 15: Thanks Guys!

Friday, August 15th, 2008

They say food is the best way to a man’s heart. With that in mind, St. Mark’s served lunch to our construction crew as a small token of appreciation for their fantastic work.

What fun to actually meet the guys under those hard hats! They represent a multitude of skills and the work they do is awesome. May God be with these admirable men and keep them safe.

Our thanks also to Ora Kuckkan for her delicious meal and very excellent serving staff. We had a great day!

Maintaining Our Blessings

Monday, August 11th, 2008

Along with God’s blessings of physical structures comes the responsibility of caring for them. Overseeing this for St. Mark’s is A.J. Ritschke, who serves as maintenance manager for both the church and school.

A.J. is the man who skillfully fabricated unavailable parts for the outdated school boiler. A.J. is also the man serving as our on-site representative during the summer construction.

“It means a lot,” says A.J. of his involvement with the building project. “People may not know many parts of this building process. But I am here everyday and see where and how the building is being built. This will help St. Mark’s in the future if we ever have questions about the building structurally.”

A.J. appreciates the opportunity to talk with members of previous building projects.

Maybe someday people will be asking me questions about this building project,” A.J. says. “This summer has been busy and trying for many people. It will all be over soon and we will have a beautiful new building when it is done. I would like to personally thank all the people that have helped in our building project, including our construction workers. People have and are working hard to get this job done on time.”

August 7: Volunteers Paint Away!

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

This week St. Mark’s members got in on the action as they painted the original classrooms and hallways. Our thanks to the 20 people who volunteered!

“The volunteers’ turnout was great,” says A.J. Ritschke, St. Mark’s maintenance manager. “I actually had enough people during the day that I had to send people home at night because the paint was drying.”

Next week work will continue on the classrooms, including the installation of the ceiling grid and flooring.

“With the hard work from the construction workers and the prayers from the congregation, we will be able to start school on time (tentatively Sept. 15),” says A.J.
